What Online Chess Classes Actually Cost in India (2026)

Try to find the price of an online chess class in India and you'll hit the same wall on almost every academy website: "Book a demo." "Enquire now." "Call for rates." In August 2026 we checked the public websites of the major academies, and only one published actual course prices. Here's everything that is public, so you can walk into any demo call knowing the market.

The market band

The most useful public number comes from UrbanPro, India's largest tutoring marketplace, which lists 4,600+ online chess tutors: its published fee band is ₹500–₹2,000 per hour, with an average tutor price around ₹400/hour at the budget end. That band is your anchor — individual freelance coaches at the bottom, titled or experienced academy coaches toward the top.

The one published academy price card

CircleChess (Caissa School of Chess) publishes beginner-course pricing — the only academy card we could verify on a live site:

Duration Price Effective
3 months ₹9,000 ~₹3,000/month
6 months ₹17,500 ~₹2,917/month
9 months ₹25,500 ~₹2,833/month
12 months ₹34,440 ~₹2,870/month

All tiers include 2 live classes per week — so the 12-month plan works out to roughly ₹330 per group class. That's a genuinely useful benchmark: a structured group program from a branded academy prices around ₹2,800–3,000/month.

Everyone else — Kingdom of Chess, Kaabil Kids, iChessU, Upstep, Chess KLUB — publishes no prices. (Kaabil does publish session counts: e.g., a Foundation course is 24 sessions over 3 months, which at the market band implies roughly ₹12,000–48,000 depending on rate — but that's arithmetic, not a quote.)

What actually determines your price

  1. Format. Level-matched group classes are the affordable default. 1-on-1 typically costs 2–4× the per-class group rate — you're buying the whole hour.
  2. Coach credentials. A FIDE-rated or titled coach costs more than an unrated tutor, and should. If you're paying above the band, the coach's rating should be verifiable on their FIDE profile.
  3. Frequency. Twice a week is the standard serious cadence (and matches the research on how much instruction kids need before benefits show — see does chess actually make kids smarter?).
  4. Commitment length. Annual plans discount 10–20% versus quarterly — worth it only after a trial and a first month you're happy with.
  5. Sibling pricing. If you have two kids, ask. (Elvyn's sibling plan exists precisely because this is the most common fee question parents ask us.)

Why academies hide pricing — and how to get a straight quote

Unpublished pricing usually means rates are negotiated per family, or the academy wants a salesperson in the loop before you see a number. You don't have to play along. Email or ask in the demo, verbatim:

  • "What is the per-class rate for [group / 1-on-1] at my child's level, and how many classes per month?"
  • "What's the total for the first month, and what happens if we stop after it?"
  • "Is there a make-up policy for missed classes?"

A serious academy answers all three in one reply. Vague answers to direct fee questions before you've paid tell you how support will feel after.

Where Elvyn stands

We quote after the free trial — because until a coach has assessed your child, any number would be a guess about the wrong format. But the trial itself is fully published: 60 minutes, live with a real coach, no credit card, parents welcome to sit in, and you leave with a written level assessment and plan whether or not you enrol. You'll have your exact quote — format, schedule, per-month total — with that plan, in writing, no phone-call chase required.

Book the free trial, and bring the questions above to it — including for us.
